The gay scene is centred around Ibiza Town (Eivissa) or, more accurately, the Old Town which is dominated by a medieval fortress and characterised by narrow cobbled alleys, imposing ramparts and a host of welcoming and varied gay venues. It really is a very pretty part of the world with the main gay street, Calle de la Virgen, playing host to bars such as Capricho, Indira, Foc I Fum, Sunrise and Bar Exis. Here you’ll come across two real favourites: Bar JJ for a taste of French hospitality from owner David, and Bar Teatro, offering the exciting combination of a genuinely warm welcome laced with outrageously bad-taste humour from Ibiza icon Simona and her ‘terrace totty’. Elsewhere in the town, you’re bound to stumble across the famous Bar La Muralla, recently changed beyond all recognition from a relatively quiet drinking establishment to a lively party bar where you’ll meet new friends! No resort description would be complete without mentioning Bar Angelo, still one of Eivissa’s most popular bars with a new, more ambient roof terrace, and you should also check the Soap Café, whose success is in no small part down to the very fit and handsome terrace staff. Try also to pop into Bar RED, which maintains its position as the most popular bar in the area of Eivissa known as D’Alt Vila. Restaurants abound in Ibiza Town; far too many good ones to mention them all here, but Restaurante Mama Pomelo always reserves a special welcome for guests, as does Studio – still one of the best eateries in the town. Clubbers may well make their way to one of the famed super-clubs, although the only exclusively gay club on the island, situated in the heart of the Old Town, is Anfora. Built into caves, there are four bars and a dance floor. The busiest night is the 70s and 80s disco kitsch night every Thursday. Anfora is open from the end of April until the middle of October. So it’s in Ibiza Town where you’re likely to spend, at the very least, a good few nights, but you’ll find that you’ll likely be staying in neighbouring Figueretas. Figueretas is, basically, the beach resort attached to Ibiza Town and it’s here where the majority of gay and gay friendly accommodation is located. Staying in Figueretas gives you the best of both worlds: an established friendly scene, a pleasant sandy beach, and all just a quarter of an hour’s walk from the pleasures of the main town. There are a number of gay and gay friendly venues in Figueretas, and these include Island Bar, probably the most popular Figueretas venue, occupying a fantastic position overlooking the Med. Other Figueretas venues worth your consideration include Café/Bistro Magnus in a great position overlooking the beach, Bar Kitsch and new bar C.U.B.E. Food wise in Figueretas, you could do a lot worse than Cafeteria Bocadito, a traditional Ibicenco tapas bar/café serving food and booze at excellent prices. Restaurante Soleado: possibly the best restaurant in Figueretas. Ibiza has some of the best beaches in Spain and, while the beach of Figueretas is clean, safe and very convenient for Respect’s accommodation, you might feel like venturing further a field. Es Cavallet is the island’s famous naturist gay beach, located about seven kilometres from Ibiza Town with its own beach bar/restaurant (El Chiringay). Just around the headland from Es Cavallet is Las Salinas: less gay and a preferred frolicking spot for the rich and famous and host to the famous ambient/chill out CDs produced by the bars on the beach itself. Closer to the holiday accommodation in Figueretas is Los Molinos: a real suntrap located at the bottom of a cliff. With so much to see and do its no surprise many holiday makers end up moving here, but if you cant afford that then at least grab one of out packages pronto!. In many ways, Ibiza is the complete holiday destination: A-list celebs,
cutting edge clubbers and a vital, cosmopolitan gay subculture have
consistently placed this small Mediterranean island at the vanguard of
the European scene for decades. Many ex-holidaymakers have settled here,
so taken have they been with the relaxed lifestyle, and many more
continue to return year after year.
